Find My and AirTag, the TSA 3-1-1 page, Google Flights, Rome2Rio, and official weather. No invented rankings.
The useful travel tools are the ones that publish a job. We do not rank apps. We do not invent a “best of” list with scores this desk did not measure. We name the pages we actually open: Apple’s Find My and AirTag, the TSA liquids rule, Google Flights, Rome2Rio, NOAA and the National Weather Service, and CDC travel health. Then we pack the bag those answers imply.
Who is traveling still decides which tool you open first. A solo backpacker on a carry-on flight starts with Flights and the 3-1-1 page. A business traveler on rail starts with Rome2Rio and a tracker in the bag. A young family on a road trip starts with weather and the car-seat plan, then Flights only if one leg is a plane.
Apple Find My and AirTag
The Apple AirTag is the tracker we file. Apple publishes 1.26 in diameter, 0.31 in height, 0.42 oz / 11.8 g, IP67, a user-replaceable CR2032, and a $29 list for a 1 pack ($99 for a 4 pack). It works with Find My: nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices can detect a Bluetooth signal and report an approximate location. Apple describes the process as anonymous and encrypted. Apple Support is the page for locating a device or an AirTag.
Adding an AirTag to Find My is the setup page. You need the iOS or iPadOS version Apple lists for that generation. Put one in the bag you cannot replace at the destination. The Aer Travel Pack 4 35L even publishes a hidden tracker pocket. That is Aer’s bullet, not our invention.
Find My is not a review score. It is a network Apple documents. If you are not in Apple’s radio, this tool is not yours. We will not invent an Android ranking to balance the paragraph.
The 3-1-1 page is a tool
Bookmark the TSA liquids rule. It is the official U.S. checkpoint page: 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less per container, one quart-sized bag per traveler, medications and infant nourishments as published exemptions. People call it FAA 3-1-1. The page that prints the number is TSA.
Open it the night you fill tubes, not the morning you undress at the tray. The travel bottles field note is the kit side of the same rule.
Google Flights, then Rome2Rio
Google Flights is the public fare-and-schedule search we use to see what actually flies. It is not an endorsement of a fare class. It is a calendar. Confirm the ticket on the airline’s own site before you treat a price as real. Carry-on rules still live on the airline’s bags page.
Rome2Rio is the public map for trains, buses, ferries, and the walk between them. Use it when the question is how the modes connect, not which app “won” a chart. A rail journey that looks simple on a flight search can be a stairs-and-ticket sprint on Rome2Rio. That sprint is why the daypack stays at your feet.
Official weather and climate
NOAA Climate.gov publishes climate maps, snapshots, and outlooks. The National Weather Service publishes forecasts and safety pages for heat and cold. Official tourism climate pages, such as a destination’s own weather planner, are the third stop when you want month-by-month normals rather than a 10-day popup.
These pages decide whether you pack from the hot and humid note, the cold note, or the rain note. They do not decide the brand of the bag.
Official travel health
CDC travelers’ health is the U.S. government desk for destination notices, vaccines, and trip health. The CDC Yellow Book 2026 is the travel-medicine reference for clinicians and the official compilation behind much of that guidance. We point at those pages. We do not write a vaccine schedule in a gear journal.
The pouch that holds the rest
Cables, adapters, and the AirTag’s spare battery live in a pouch, not a pocket. The Peak Design Tech Pouch is one we already file. Apple AirPods Pro 2 sit in the same personal item if you want quiet at the gate. None of that is an app ranking.
Open the Trip Planner after the tools have named the trip. Who is going, how they move, and how long they stay still decide the bag. The tools decide whether the bag needs a shell, a 100 ml tray, or a tracker in the hidden pocket. That is the whole stack: official pages, then a journey, then the gear already on our list.
