How we pick
Best is a situation, not a trophy.
We are taste makers. We still start from the trip: who is going, where they land, why they are moving, and how many nights the bag has to last. The same 40 L pack is not the best bag for a retiree on a cruise and a solo trekker on a ridge.
What “best” means here
Best is the kit that fits the traveler, the place, the purpose, and the length. A weekend in Lisbon in March with a lot of walking wants a different list than a week on a ship. The Trip Planner and the 25 journey pages apply that rule in public.
How a gear pick earns a slot
- A real product, still sold. We log the current SKU. If a maker retires a bag, the successor is the pick and the old URL stays so links still work.
- Published specs. Volume, weight, battery hours, materials, and warranty names come from the maker’s product page or spec sheet. The source sits beside the number.
- A dated price band. Low and high USD from the day we checked. Street prices move. Confirm on the maker’s site or Amazon before you buy.
- A verified Amazon ASIN when we have one, or a search for the product name. The Associates tag lives in one constant.
- A top pick and two or three alternatives on every journey stop, so you can choose the kit you already own around.
What we do not invent
Star averages, review counts, lab scores, and testimonials stay off the pages. If a figure is missing from the maker’s page, the cell stays empty. Outdoor Gear Lab and Wirecutter publish their own tests. Their scores stay on their pages.
How the Trip Planner uses this
You describe the trip in a sentence. A rules engine (and Workers AI when the binding is present) reads place, month, who is going, and how you move. The list is climate-aware for that place and month, then mapped to gear already on this desk. The planner always works without the model.
Affiliate disclosure
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Stay, flight, and activity links are structured so Booking, Expedia, GetYourGuide, and Viator IDs can be dropped into one config file later. Those IDs are blank today.
