How a gear pick earns its place

The rules of the desk.

For the short version of the curation process, read How we pick.

Every shortlist label has to survive a simple test: can a stranger reconstruct why the item is here from public, citable facts?

What we log

  • Manufacturer specifications: volume, weight, battery hours, materials, warranty names, taken from brand product pages or official spec sheets.
  • Price ranges: a low/high USD band observed on the maker’s shop or a clearly labeled regional shop, dated on the page. Street prices move. A screenshot is a record of that day.
  • Still-sold check: when a maker retires a bag for a successor, the current gear pick is the one we log. The predecessor stays in the note as history.

What a shortlist label means

Editors’ shortlist: weight, packability and warranty research means we compared published grams or pounds, whether the bag is sized against the carry-on template the maker itself claims, and whether a written warranty or repair program exists.

Outdoor Gear Lab and Wirecutter publish their own tests. We point at the idea of a method. Their scores stay on their pages.

What stays off the gear picks

Star averages, invented reviews, made-up review counts, and badges this desk did not earn stay off the gear picks. If a figure is missing from the maker’s page, the cell stays empty. A desk-research shortlist is a filing label. Laboratory scores belong to laboratories.

  • Star averages, NPS, or editorial scores dressed as science.
  • User testimonials and invented names.
  • Review counts, bestseller ranks, or award badges we did not earn.

Affiliate disclosure

A Check price button on an Amazon listing uses our Associates tag. The tag lives in one constant so it can be swapped in a single place. Those links use rel="sponsored nofollow noopener". A View product button goes to the maker or another retailer page and does not carry the tag.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. That sentence is also in the footer on every page.
