Weekend Trip Packing List

Two nights is a 28 L job if you pack from the weekend city list. The extra cube is how a short trip becomes a heavy one.

A weekend is two sleeps if you planned and three if the outbound ran late. That is not a 40 L problem. The best weekend bag is the smallest published bag that still holds two walking outfits, one nicer layer, and the weather you cannot argue with. Who is going, and how they move, still decides the opening style. The nights decide the liters.

We pack from the weekend city field note. That list is already organized by job: carry, clothes, weather, work, sleep, toiletries, sound. Products appear only when they already have a gear pick on this site. The extra cube, the third pair of shoes, and the “just in case” knit are how a 48-hour trip becomes a sore shoulder.

The weekend city list is the brief

The field note packs a 48-hour city weekend into one bag:

That is the whole list. A solo backpacker on a carry-on flight can live on it. A business traveler on rail can live on it with a workpack at their feet. A young family on a road trip can live on it for the adults, once the car seat and stroller have already left the house.

28 L is the published weekend volume

The Cotopaxi Allpa 28L is the weekend edition of the Allpa family. Cotopaxi publishes 28 L and a suitcase-style full wrap zip, plus a lighter empty weight than the 35 L on current pages. That is the bag we point at when the clothes are two nights.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L publishes 35 L and 22 x 12 x 10 in. It is the right bag when a coat or a work week sneaks into a “weekend.” It is the wrong bag when you are packing a Friday-to-Sunday city hop and filling the extra seven liters because they are there.

If the trip is a day bag that also holds a shirt, the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L is the 24 L panel loader on our list. The Osprey Daylite Plus is the 20 L class museum-day bag. Neither replaces a 28 L wrap zip when you need drawers. Both replace a 35 L pack when you do not.

What not to add

Do not add a second clothes cube “to stay organized.” One cube for the two outfits, one small pouch for the evening layer if you must. Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate earns a place only if the weekend includes a swim or a wet walk home. Eagle Creek publishes Isolate to keep dirty or wet kit away from clean clothes. On a dry city weekend, Isolate can stay home.

Do not add a full week of toiletries. The TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule allows travel-sized containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, in one quart-sized bag per traveler. That is plenty for two nights. The travel bottles field note is the hub.

Do not add plane-sleep kit unless the inbound is a red-eye. A weekend that leaves at 9 a.m. does not need a neck pillow that will sit in the restaurant booth.

Do not add a 45 L pack because the photo looks like adventure. Two nights in a city is a 28 L argument.

Who is going still changes the opening

A solo walker who will wear the bag between platforms wants straps they will actually use. A rail traveler who will lift once onto a rack wants a wrap zip they can rummage. A family in a car can treat the 28 L as a motel drawer and keep snacks in the Daylite.

Open the Trip Planner and name the traveler and the mode. Length is the optional third step on the journey page. Pick weekend. The 28 L Allpa, the weekend city list, and a shell you can stuff are the kit. The extra cube is the one you leave on the bed at home.
