Best Carry-On Backpacks in 2026

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is the first pick on this shortlist. Osprey publishes 40 L, 22 × 14 × 9 in, and 3.486 lb on its spec table, with a starting list as low as $185 and the All Mighty Guarantee. Those are the same three outer measurements United publishes for a carry-on bag. If you want the best carry-on backpack you can check against a public spec sheet, start there, then read the packs that trade weight, price, or a clamshell opening for a different trip.

One person on a cabin limit can also open the solo backpacker carry-on journeys , which start from a pack in this shortlist.

A laptop week uses the Aer row. The business trip packing list starts from that 35 L pack.

The same carry-on limit shows up in the carry-on only packing guide .

Key Takeaways

  • The Osprey Farpoint 40 leads because its product page publishes 40 L, 3.486 lb, 22 × 14 × 9 in, a $185 starting list, and the All Mighty Guarantee. United publishes a carry-on limit of 9 × 14 × 22 in, including handles and wheels, which is the same three measurements. A review count for the pack is not published on this page.
  • Empty weight and inches are copied only from the maker page we cite, and the Fairview 40, Allpa 28L, Tortuga 40L, Bellroy Transit Workpack, and Evergoods CPL24 have no empty weight on this note. Those cells say not published. We do not borrow a sibling model's number.
  • Price cells are the USD bands already logged on each gear page, not a live checkout total. The Farpoint and Fairview bands are $185 to $200, and the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L band is $299 to $300. Confirm the current tag on the maker page before you buy.
  • A published liter count is not a promise that a gate agent will accept the bag. The Allpa 35L publishes 22 × 12 × 10 in, and that 10 in figure is past United's 9 in measurement. The Aer Travel Pack 4 publishes 21.5 × 13.5 × 9 in, which sits at or under each United measurement.
  • Warranty language is whatever the maker writes, and the length stays blank when this note does not copy a term. Osprey names the All Mighty Guarantee, Tortuga and Peak Design describe a lifetime warranty or guarantee, and Bellroy describes a 3-year warranty on many bags. Aer, Cotopaxi, and Evergoods warranty lengths are not published here.

What a carry-on backpack actually is (and what it is not)

A carry-on backpack is a pack meant to ride in the cabin with you. The useful ones print liters, an empty weight, and outside measurements, and they put shoulder straps on a bag that opens more like luggage than a daypack. On this page the logged volumes run from the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader at 24 L to the Peak Design Travel Backpack, which publishes 30 L compressed, 35 L standard, and 45 L expanded, and the Patagonia Black Hole MLC at 45 L.

It is not a checked suitcase, and it is not this site's daypack category. It is also not a guarantee that an airline will take the bag once it is full. United's bag page says a carry-on must be 9 × 14 × 22 in (23 × 35 × 56 cm), including handles and wheels. The same page says a personal item must be 9 × 10 × 17 in (22 × 25 × 43 cm). Those two boxes are the inch checks used here. A different airline can publish a different box, and a budget-airline sizer is not copied on this note.

Liters and inches answer different questions. A 40 L name can still publish a depth over or under United's 9 in figure. Empty weight is the maker's figure for the empty bag. Osprey notes that torso size can change the Farpoint weight, so 3.486 lb is the cited table, not every size. A warranty is the written repair or replace terms, not a comfort score. If a cell says not published, the gear note does not contain that figure, and this page does not guess it.

How We Ranked These Carry-On Backpacks

Five published facts decide the order. Capacity is the liters the maker prints. Empty weight is the figure on the cited spec table. Price is the USD band logged on the gear page, with the source named there. Airline carry-on dimension fit is a comparison of the maker's published inches with United's published 9 × 14 × 22 in carry-on limit. Warranty is the program the maker names, including the term when this note actually copies one.

The Farpoint 40 is first because it is the only 40 L pack on the list that publishes all five: 40 L, 3.486 lb, $185 to $200, 22 × 14 × 9 in, and the All Mighty Guarantee. The Fairview 40 is second because Osprey publishes the same 40 L brief and the same price neighborhood, with a women's-fit harness, while weight and inches are not published on its note. Packs with fewer filled cells follow. There is no point score.

The Best Carry-On Backpacks in 2026

These ten packs are the carry-on backpacks already logged on this site, ordered by the five criteria above, starting with the sheet that fills every cell.

Each pick repeats only figures that appear on the maker page, the gear note, or United's bag page, and a star rating and a review count are not published for any pack here.

Use the gear page linked on the pick for the retailer button this site already uses, because the price band is the logged range, not a promise that the tag still matches.

If you need cubes before you need another pack, the packing cubes field note is the companion page.

1. Osprey Farpoint 40, best for one-bag travelers

Osprey's cited Farpoint 40 table lists 40 L (2,441 cubic inches), 22 × 14 × 9 in (55 × 35 × 23 cm), and 3.486 lb / 1.581 kg for the size shown. The same note says the zippered sleeve holds a laptop up to 16 in, and the shell line we logged is bluesign approved 450D recycled twist dobby polyester with a PFAS-free DWR. Osprey's maker card dates the company to 1974. The logged price is as low as $185, and the band is $185 to $200 because an Outdoor Gear Lab spec table has cited a $200 list. The warranty name is the All Mighty Guarantee, repair or replace, with exceptions on the support page.

United's carry-on rule is 9 × 14 × 22 in, including handles and wheels. The Farpoint's published 22 × 14 × 9 in are those same three numbers. That match is arithmetic on two public pages, not a report from a gate sizer, and it does not cover a bag stuffed past the published shell.

A published review count is not on this note, so that cell stays blank in spirit: not published. Empty weight can change with torso size. The 3.486 lb figure belongs to the table we cited, which the gear note already flags. Fairview is the women's-fit sibling and gets its own row so this weight is not copied across.

Best suited for one-bag travelers who want a 40 L pack with liters, empty weight, inches, a price band, and a named repair program all on public pages. Look at the Fairview 40 if you need the women's-fit harness Osprey sells as a separate pack, or at the Aer Travel Pack 4 if you want the lay-flat admin layout instead.

2. Osprey Fairview 40, best for a women's-fit harness

Osprey publishes the Fairview 40 as the women's-fit sibling of the Farpoint 40, not as a colorway. The gear note logs 40 L and the All Mighty Guarantee, and it puts the price in the same $185 to $200 neighborhood as the Farpoint. The maker card dates Osprey to 1974. The fit difference is the harness. Osprey's own naming on this note says Fairview means the women's-fit travel pack. That is the fact that earns the row. A shopper who only compared the shared 40 L name would miss it.

Empty weight is not published on this Fairview note, and neither are the outside inches. The Farpoint table's 3.486 lb and 22 × 14 × 9 in stay on the Farpoint row. Copying them here would invent a Fairview spec. The manufacturer link on the gear page is Osprey's site rather than a single SKU URL, so the live table has to be read there before a weight or an inch figure is treated as current.

United's 9 × 14 × 22 in carry-on limit still applies as the airline number, but this row cannot say the Fairview's shell matches it until inches are on the note. Warranty coverage is the same All Mighty Guarantee named for Osprey, again with exceptions on Osprey's support page. A review count is not published. The rank is second because volume, price band, and warranty are published, and the two missing cells are stated instead of filled.

Best suited for travelers who want Osprey's 40 L travel brief on a harness the maker labels women's-fit, with the same named guarantee. If you need a published empty weight and a published inch set today, use the Farpoint 40 row, where those figures are actually printed.

3. Aer Travel Pack 4 35L, best for business trips

Aer's current page for the Travel Pack 4 35L lists 35 L, 3.90 lb for the ballistic nylon 35L, and 21.5 × 13.5 × 9 in (54.5 × 34 × 23 cm). The laptop line is a padded suspended sleeve up to 16 in. The shell we logged is 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon, bluesign approved, with YKK zippers and Duraflex hardware. Aer dates the company to 2014 on the maker card. The ballistic nylon 35L list on aersf.com is $259. X-Pac and Ultra variants have listed at $289 and $309, so the logged band is $259 to $309. Aer marks Travel Pack 3 discontinued on its own page and points buyers here, which is why this row follows the live SKU.

Set those inches next to United's 22 in, 14 in, and 9 in limits. 21.5 is under 22, 13.5 is under 14, and 9 matches 9. That is a comparison of published numbers. The 3.90 lb empty weight is heavier than the Farpoint's 3.486 lb and lighter than the Peak Design pack's 4.5 lb. A packed weight is not published.

A warranty length is not published on the Aer gear note. The maker card says Aer publishes warranty and returns coverage on its support pages, which is where the terms live, not a copied year count. A review count is not published. The row sits behind the two Osprey packs because the warranty cell is open.

Best suited for business trips that want a lay-flat 35 L pack with a published 16 in sleeve, named hardware, and inches at or under each United carry-on measurement. Skip it if you need a named lifetime repair program on this page, because that term is not copied here, or if 3.90 lb is more empty weight than you want.

4. Cotopaxi Allpa 35L, best for clamshell packing

Cotopaxi publishes the Allpa 35L at 35 L (2,135 cubic inches) and 22 × 12 × 10 in (56 × 30 × 25 cm). The redesign weight we logged is 2 lb 15 oz / 1.33 kg. A Del Día page has shown 2 lb 7 oz / 1.1 kg, and the gear note treats that as a different SKU, so the table uses the redesign figure only. The shell copy is 100% recycled 840D TPU-coated nylon plus 840D ballistic ripstop. Cotopaxi's maker card dates the company to 2014. The logged price band is $200 to $330 because the brand's own shops have listed different tags by edition.

United publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in, or 56 × 35 × 23 cm. The Allpa's published 56 cm matches United's 56 cm length, the 30 cm width is under 35 cm, and the 25 cm third figure is over United's 23 cm. That is why the table says the 10 in figure is past United's 9 in measurement. The clamshell opening is a full-wrap zipper with mesh clothing compartments, which is why cubes sit flat in it.

A warranty length is not published on this product note. Cotopaxi's maker card says the brand publishes a limited warranty and repair path on its support site. A review count is not published. The 1.33 kg redesign weight is lighter than the Farpoint's 1.581 kg. The wide price band is not a single tag.

Best suited for travelers who want a suitcase-style 35 L opening and a published empty weight under 1.4 kg on the redesign spec. Check the 10 in depth against the airline you are actually flying, because that published figure is past United's 9 in measurement.

5. Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, best for a travel-only pack brand

Tortuga's current name on this site is the Travel Backpack 40L, the line that succeeded the Outbreaker name. The gear note logs 40 L and a carry-on claim written as brand copy: designed as a carry-on travel backpack. It does not log an empty weight, a fabric denier, or an inch set, and the note says not to copy old Outbreaker gram weights onto the new cut. The logged price band is $299 to $349, with the instruction to confirm the tag on tortugabackpacks.com. Tortuga's maker card dates the company to 2011 and says the brand publishes a lifetime warranty. That warranty cell is filled from the maker card.

Without inches, this row cannot be checked against United's 9 × 14 × 22 in limit. The carry-on sentence from the brand is not a substitute for those three numbers. Capacity still places it with the Farpoint and Fairview at 40 L. Price sits above the Farpoint's $185 start. The product URL we cite is the live 40L page, which is the right place to read any gram weight before it is added.

A review count is not published. The rank follows the packs that print more of the five criteria. The reason it stays on the shortlist is the one the gear note already gives: a 40 L carry-on brief from a brand that makes travel bags, plus a written lifetime warranty, under the current name rather than the retired Outbreaker SKU.

Best suited for travelers who want a 40 L pack from a travel-only brand and a lifetime warranty the maker describes on its site. If the decision depends on empty weight or on United's inch limit, those two cells are not published on this note, so use a row that prints them.

6. Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, best for expandable volume

Peak Design publishes three volumes for this pack: 30 L compressed, 35 L standard, and 45 L expanded. The empty weight logged from the authorized spec table is 2.05 kg (4.5 lb). The laptop sleeve is up to 16 × 11 × 1 in on the maker table. The shell is 100% recycled 400D nylon canvas with a 900D bottom liner. Peak Design's maker card dates the company to 2011 and describes a lifetime guarantee. The list price logged on peakdesign.com is $299.95, and the band on this page is $299 to $300.

Outside inches for the whole pack are not published on the gear note. The carry-on line we do have is the maker's own sentence: the standard config meets international carry-on, and the expanded state is a gear-hauler. That sentence is not United's 9 × 14 × 22 in rule, and it does not say the 45 L state meets it. Four-sided access is the packing claim: top, front, side, and rear. UltraZip weatherproof zippers are a manufacturer claim.

At 4.5 lb the empty pack is the heaviest weight printed on this list, above the Aer's 3.90 lb and the Farpoint's 3.486 lb. A review count is not published. The rank reflects a full volume story and a heavy empty weight, with the inch cell left as the maker's carry-on sentence rather than a United comparison.

Best suited for travelers who want one pack with published 30 L, 35 L, and 45 L states and who will use the 35 L standard state when a carry-on limit matters. It is a poor match if you want the lightest empty pack on this page, because 4.5 lb is the highest empty weight we can cite here.

7. Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, best for a named maximum-legal-carry-on brief

Patagonia puts 45 L in the product name and uses MLC to mean Maximum Legal Carry-on. That naming is the carry-on claim on this note. The fabric family is Black Hole recycled polyester with a weather-resistant coating, and the note says to read the live SKU for the exact denier. Patagonia's maker card dates the company to 1973 and names the Ironclad Guarantee, described as limited, with the terms at patagonia.com/ironclad-guarantee. The logged price band is $239 to $279. The note says the bag has commonly listed near $249 on patagonia.com, and the band exists because colors and seasons move. Empty weight is not printed on this note. Patagonia refreshes the SKU, and the gear page says the current product page carries the gram weight for the generation on sale.

Inches are not published here, so this row is not checked against United's 9 × 14 × 22 in limit. The MLC name is Patagonia's claim, not a measurement we can subtract from 22, 14, or 9. Volume still sits at the top of the list with the Peak Design expanded state at 45 L, and the logged price starts at $239, under Peak Design's $299 floor.

A review count is not published. The row sits after packs that print inches or a weight, because those cells are open here. The reason it remains is the public 45 L name plus a written guarantee program.

Best suited for travelers who want a 45 L bag whose name states a maximum-legal-carry-on brief and who want Patagonia's Ironclad Guarantee in writing. Read the live SKU for grams and inches before you compare it with United's limit, because neither figure is copied on this note.

Source: Patagonia Black Hole MLC. Gear page and retailer link.

8. Cotopaxi Allpa 28L, best for a shorter trip

The Allpa 28L is the smaller Allpa: Cotopaxi publishes 28 L and the same suitcase-style full-wrap opening as the rest of the Allpa family. The gear note says the empty weight is lighter than the 35L and is listed on the 28L page, but the number itself is not copied here, so the weight cell is not published. Inches are not published on this note either. Cotopaxi dates to 2014. The logged price band is $180 to $250, and the note says the list varies by edition.

At 28 L the published volume is 7 L under the Allpa 35L and 12 L under the Farpoint 40. That gap is the short-trip argument, and it does not say how many shirts fit. United's carry-on box still cannot be checked until inches are logged.

Warranty length is not published on the 28L note. Use the Cotopaxi support path named on the maker card, and do not assume the Allpa 35L fabric spec applies. A review count is not published. The laptop size is not published on this note. The rank is lower because three of the five criteria are open. The published 28 L and the price band are enough to keep it as the short-trip Allpa.

Best suited for a shorter trip that can live in a published 28 L clamshell instead of the 35 L Allpa. If you need the redesign weight or the inch set, those figures are on the 35L row, not this one.

Source: Cotopaxi Allpa 28L. Gear page and retailer link.

9. Bellroy Transit Workpack, best for a work-first personal item

Bellroy's Transit Workpack is logged as a work-first travel pack: a laptop sleeve and a silhouette aimed at meetings rather than a 40 L one-bag load. The volume cell says not published because the gear note calls it a workpack in the about 20 L class and then says the exact liters live on the current SKU. This page does not turn "about 20 L" into an exact liter. Empty weight and outside inches are not published here. Bellroy's maker card dates the company to 2010 and says Bellroy describes a 3-year warranty on many bags. That is the warranty cell, and the current policy is the one to read.

The logged price band is $199 to $249. The note says the list has commonly appeared near $229 on bellroy.com and that editions move. Without inches, the pack cannot be scored against United's 9 × 14 × 22 in carry-on limit or the 9 × 10 × 17 in personal-item limit.

A review count is not published. A laptop inch size is not copied, only that a dedicated sleeve exists and the size is printed on the product page. Bellroy has shipped more than one Transit generation, which is why the note refuses a single liter. The rank is low on the five criteria because capacity, weight, and inches are open. The 3-year warranty phrase is the cell that is actually filled.

Best suited for a work trip that wants a slim pack with a dedicated laptop sleeve and a 3-year warranty phrase Bellroy publishes for many bags. Do not treat it as a 35 L or 40 L one-bag pack, because the exact liter count is not published on this note.

10. Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L, best for under-seat daily carry

Evergoods publishes the Civic Panel Loader at 24 L and describes access as a full panel loader, a clamshell-style front panel. The gear note files it as a personal item and daily travel pack, not as a 7-day suitcase. Evergoods' maker card dates the company to 2018. The logged price band is $259 to $299, and the note says CPL24 list prices have sat in the mid-to-high $200s depending on edition, including standard versus UltraX or special runs. Empty weight is not published because it can differ by generation, and the note says to read the page for the generation you buy. Outside inches and warranty length are not published.

24 L is the smallest volume on this shortlist, 4 L under the Allpa 28L and 16 L under the Farpoint 40. That gap is why the row is the under-seat and short-hop pick rather than the one-bag pick. This note does not have CPL24 inches, so it does not claim a match to United's 9 × 10 × 17 in personal-item box or the 9 × 14 × 22 in carry-on box.

A review count and a laptop size are not published. The logged price floor of $259 matches the Aer Travel Pack 4 floor, at a published 24 L instead of 35 L. The row is last because weight, inches, and warranty length are open.

Best suited for under-seat daily carry and a short city hop, where a published 24 L panel loader is the tool and a 40 L suitcase pack is too much. For a week in one bag, use a row with a published 35 L or 40 L and a printed empty weight.

What results look like

Example, built from the table, not from a packed-bag test. Osprey lists the Farpoint 40 at 3.486 lb. Peak Design's logged empty weight for the Travel Backpack 45L is 4.5 lb. 4.5 minus 3.486 is 1.014 lb. That is the published empty-weight gap between those two rows.

A second example uses inches. United's carry-on limit is 9 × 14 × 22 in. The Farpoint publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in, the same three measurements. The Allpa 35L publishes 22 × 12 × 10 in (56 × 30 × 25 cm). United's metric line is 56 × 35 × 23 cm. The Allpa's 25 cm figure is 2 cm over United's 23 cm figure. We did not put either bag in a sizer.

A third example uses price bands only. The Farpoint's logged floor is $185. The Peak Design floor is $299. 299 minus 185 is $114 between those two logged floors. It is not a receipt.

FAQ

What is the best 40L travel backpack on this list?

The Osprey Farpoint 40. It is the 40 L pack with liters, empty weight, inches, a price band, and a named warranty all published: 40 L, 3.486 lb, 22 × 14 × 9 in, $185 to $200, and the All Mighty Guarantee. The Fairview 40 is the women's-fit 40 L in the same price band. Tortuga's Travel Backpack 40L publishes 40 L and a lifetime warranty, and its empty weight and inches are not on this note.

What is the first carry-on backpack on this shortlist?

The Osprey Farpoint 40. It is the only 40 L pack here with published liters, empty weight, inches, a price band, and a named warranty. The logged figures are 40 L, 3.486 lb, 22 × 14 × 9 in, and $185 to $200.

How do these packs compare with United's carry-on size?

United publishes 9 × 14 × 22 in, including handles and wheels. The Farpoint's 22 × 14 × 9 in matches those three measurements, and the Aer Travel Pack 4's 21.5 × 13.5 × 9 in sits at or under each one. Packs without published inches are marked not published and are not given a pass.

What does a carry-on backpack weigh when it is empty?

Only some rows print a weight. The Farpoint table we cite says 3.486 lb, the Aer ballistic nylon 35L says 3.90 lb, the Allpa 35L redesign says 1.33 kg, and the Peak Design pack says 4.5 lb. Every other empty weight on this page is not published.

How much do these carry-on backpacks cost?

The logged bands run from the Allpa 28L at $180 to $250 and the Farpoint at $185 to $200 up to Tortuga at $299 to $349 and Peak Design at $299 to $300. Those are the ranges on the gear notes, not a live cart. A review count is not published for any of them.

What warranty does Osprey publish?

Osprey names the All Mighty Guarantee and says it will repair or replace damage or defect, with exceptions on its support page. That name is on both the Farpoint and the Fairview rows. Other brands on this page use different programs, and several warranty lengths are not published here.

How is a carry-on backpack different from a personal item?

United publishes a carry-on box of 9 × 14 × 22 in for the overhead bin and a personal-item box of 9 × 10 × 17 in for under the seat. A 40 L pack that matches the larger box is not automatically a personal item.

What should I check on a strict-sizing airline?

Read that airline's own inch chart and compare it with the inches on the pack you are buying. This page only runs the comparison against United's published carry-on limit. A budget airline's sizer size is not published here, so the cell would be a guess if we filled it.

The field hub is the full list of shortlists on this site, from bags to bottles.

Open the field shortlist when this page has answered the pack question and the next category is still open.

The Farpoint 40 gear page carries the maker link and the retailer link this site already uses.

Packing cubes are the companion note if the bag is chosen and the clothes still need a system.

Every price above is the band logged on the gear note, with the source named on the pick.

Start at the hub if you are still choosing the category rather than the model.
